Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a rare inherited metabolic disorder where the body cannot break down the amino acid phenylalanine. If a child with PKU consumes standard dietary protein (meat, dairy, bread, eggs), toxic levels accumulate in the brain, causing irreversible mental impairment and severe developmental regression.

The only cure is strict, lifelong adherence to medical nutrition: synthetic phenylalanine-free amino acid formulas and specialized imported low-protein foods (flour, rice, pasta).

Because these dietary essentials are prohibitively expensive and largely unavailable in ordinary Egyptian markets, Mersal established a specialized PKU Support Center. We import and distribute monthly medical nutritional packages, run biochemical blood monitoring, and train mothers on therapeutic culinary techniques.
